The short answer: bring flip-flops, a fast-drying towel, a hanging wash bag, and a sealed bag for everything that comes off wet. Gym showers are a logistics problem, not a hygiene one. The floor is wet, there is nowhere dry to put anything, and you have one hook.
Why is showering at the gym harder than showering at home?
Because at home everything has a surface. In a gym changing room you get one hook and a bench that somebody just sat on in wet kit. Anything you put down gets wet, and anything that gets wet goes home in the same bag as your work shirt.
What do you need?
- Flip-flops or shower shoes. Non-negotiable, and the thing people skip first.
- A hanging wash bag. One hook is the constraint — a bag that hangs and has compartments turns one hook into five places to put things.
- A fast-drying towel. A cotton bath towel goes home wet and stays wet against everything else.
- A sealed bag for wet things. Towel, swimsuit, worn kit. Everything damp in one place, and emptied that night.
- Flat-folded clothes, packed last so nothing is on top of them.
What order do you do it in?
- Hang the wash bag before you undress. Sounds obvious. Nobody does it.
- Shower. Cool it down at the end — dressing while still warm means sweating into clean clothes.
- Hair into a fast-drying wrap, then leave it while you do everything else.
- Dry fully, then deodorant. In that order.
- Dress. Hair last.
- Everything wet into the sealed bag, in one movement, before you leave the room.
How do you keep your towel from making everything else damp?
It goes in the sealed part of the bag, not loose. A damp towel rolled next to a work shirt will transfer, every time, and a bag that smells is nearly always a bag with a towel in it.
How long does it take?
Twenty minutes if the bag is packed right, and forty if it is not — and the difference is almost never the shower. It is looking for things.
