How to Look Put Together After the Gym

The short answer: change completely, deal with your hair before your face, and bring one thing that changes the outfit rather than a second outfit. Looking like the gym was not your last stop is mostly about the hair and the shoes.

Why does this day feel harder than it is?

Because the instinct is to pack a whole second outfit, which makes the bag enormous, and then you carry it all evening.

You do not need a second outfit. You need the same clothes plus one thing that shifts them — different shoes, a jacket, earrings. That is the difference between looking like you came from the gym and looking like you did not.

What order do you get ready in?

  1. Cool down first, longer than feels necessary. Dressing warm means sweating through whatever you just put on.
  2. Hair before face. Wet hair drips onto anything you do first, so it wins.
  3. Dry fully, then deodorant.
  4. Dress, then the one thing that changes the outfit.

What do you do about hair with no time?

A fast-drying wrap while you do everything else, then a large claw clip rather than a hair tie — a tie leaves a dent, and a dent reads as gym. If you are not washing, tinted dry shampoo powder rather than aerosol, because white cast at dark roots is worse than the oil.

What about the sweaty kit?

Sealed, in its own zone, and not opened again until you are home. This is the day where a bag that smells is most noticeable, because you are carrying it into somewhere social.
